Zirconia crowns with a ceramic veneering layer
A layered zirconia-ceramic crown has a strong zirconia core with ceramic built up on top. Of all crowns, it comes closest to a natural tooth in the way it handles light.
What it is made of
Inside is zirconia, a very strong base. On top, a technician builds up ceramic by hand to match the shade and see-through quality of your tooth. It is closer to the work of an artist than of a machine.
Not the same as staining
Sometimes a monolithic zirconia crown is simply stained and glazed. That is a different thing. A layered crown has a separate ceramic layer, and it usually looks more lifelike.
Who it suits
People who want the most natural look for their front teeth. It is chosen less often for back teeth, because the ceramic on top is the most brittle part and copes less well with heavy chewing.
